Jenny was referred to us to make an application for DLA (Daily Living Allowance for her child, who has multiple health conditions including autism.
Her child attends a Special Educational Needs school and has an Education Health Care Plan in place.
Jenny is unable to work due to her son’s health conditions which means he is often unable to attend school. Jenny claims Universal Credit which is benefit capped.
Our Adviser helped Jenny to complete the DLA application, which she then returned to the DWP with supporting medical evidence and input from the child’s support worker.
Whilst awaiting the outcome of the DLA, Jenny contacted us regarding rent increase and our Adviser assisted her in requesting a lower rent. Together with that agreement and a Discretionary Housing Payment, Jenny and her son were able to stay in their home.
The DLA was awarded to Jenny in October 2024 along with Carers Element. With these in place, the benefit cap was lifted, resulting in back payments of £2,090.
In total, Jenny received increased benefits of £6,933 per year and back dated payments of £6,076. She can also expect to receive a further £3,991 per year for Carers Allowance. In addition, Jenny received a rent reduction of £600 per year and rent support of £600 DHP plus help towards energy bills of £200. This represents a financial gain of £17,750 which has made a significant difference to Jenny and her son.
